Coat of Arms of Duke Cosimo De´ Medici

The coat of arms of Duke Cosimo dates back to approximately 1558, making it most probably the first "public" work by Jean Boulogne.

The Medici family coat of arms seems to have been inspired by the one designed by Michelangelo for Palazzo Farnese in Rome and more in general, by the Mannerism in the style of Michelangelo of certain local talents, such as Niccolò Tribolo, or those from the workshop of Vasari. In fact, the coat of arms was part of renovation work of the 14th-century Palagio di Parte Guelfa, carried out by Giorgio Vasari, when the elegant hanging loggia was added.
